Assistant Provincial Grand Master W Bro Cliff Sturt PGJD, together with a delegation of Provincial Grand Officers, visited Alliance and Memorial Lodge No 652 on Tuesday 7th November 2017. During the meeting the Lodge’s newest Advancee, Bro Colin Bell, was presented with his Grand Lodge Certificate. The highlight of the meeting was a talk given by W Bro Cliff Sturt on the 12th century origins and subsequent history of stonemasons’ marks. In a fascinating and enlightening lecture we heard how the medieval stonemasons used their marks to identify their work when they presented themselves at the buildings’ lodges to receive their wages, and how other recognition systems were used as the masons moved from job to job.
